10 Reasons Why We Love Knightdale Station in 2024

Hey there! We are so excited to share with you our love for Knightdale Station, a beautiful new home community in Knightdale, NC.  Knightdale Station has so many amazing features at a seriously competitive price point compared to other areas of the Raleigh real estate market: spacious and charming homes with tons of features, proximity to a huge park with beautiful amenities, and a great location near Raleigh. In this post, we will tell you ten reasons why we think Knightdale Station is one of our favorite places to live in the Triangle area. Let’s get started!

1. Beautiful Homes

The first thing to know about this charming neighborhood is all about the stunning homes currently built by Toll Brothers and Dream Finders Homes, two of the leading builders of homes in the US. They have various floor plans to choose from, and they let you customize your home with different finishes and options. We love the quality and craftsmanship of the homes offered here, as they all have cement fiber siding, stone or brick accents, plenty of windows for natural light, and energy-saving features. 

Most of the elevations of the homes already built in the neighborhood range from a craftsman cottage to a coastal or traditional aesthetic.  However, most newer builds have some more modern touches inside with more modern lighting and finishes.  

In some older, already developed sections, local builders such as Garman Homes and Caviness and Cates were previous builders, giving the neighborhood a more blended (less cookie-cutter) look.

2. Knightdale Station Park

One of the best things about living in Knightdale Station is having access to Knightdale Station Park, a 76-acre park with something for everyone. The park includes an amphitheater, an outdoor YMCA pool with a waterslide, a lap pool, a railroad and farm-themed playground, a dog park, a 9-hole disc golf course, a splash pad, lighted athletic fields, and miles of trails.

We love spending time outdoors with our kids and always find something fun and exciting to do at the park. The park also hosts various events throughout the year, such as free concerts, movies in the park, festivals, and fireworks (which you can see from your backyard from certain areas in the neighborhood- no need to fight the crowds)! 

The park is truly a gem in our community. With access to the park with a greenway extension from the community mail kiosk, Knightdale Station residents love having such a wonderful resource outside their doorstep.

By the way, have I mentioned yet that Knightdale Station is also a golf cart-friendly community?  So, if you happen to fall in love with a home being built a little bit further away from the main access to Knightdale Station Park, you can easily hop on your golf cart or bike and be there in a flash.

3. Convenient Location

Knightdale Station is conveniently located within walking distance of downtown Knightdale and a short drive to downtown Raleigh, NC, which means easy access to shopping, dining, entertainment, and employment opportunities. Residents can hop on Knightdale Blvd and reach downtown Raleigh in 15-20 minutes or take I-540 and explore the rest of the Triangle area. This neighborhood is close to schools, a Level 1 Trauma Center at WakeMed, and other essential services

Within less than a ten-minute drive, residents have easy access to plenty of big box stores and dining such as Target, Home Depot, Food Lion, Lowe’s, Publix, Panera, Starbucks, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Chick-fil-a, Bojangles, Cook Out, PetSmart, Best Buy, Academy Sports + Outdoors, Kohl’s, Kirkland’s, Planet Fitness, Alpaca, Walmart, TJ Maxx, Chili’s, Applebees, Saltgrass Steakhouse, Buffalo Wild Wings, and so many more. There’s even a Tesla supercharger station within 6 minutes of the neighborhood!

Healthcare access is also very convenient, with Duke, UNC Health, and WakeMed having outpatient urgent care, primary care, and specialty care facilities within Knightdale. A brand-new WakeMed stand-alone emergency department that also treats children just opened in Wendell Falls, less than a 10-minute drive from the neighborhood, and the WakeMed Raleigh Hospital campus is approximately a 15-minute drive away.

However, we love to support local as much as possible! Some of our favorite businesses that are within walking or biking distance from the neighborhood are:

By the way, did we mention how close Knightdale Station is to one of our other loved neighborhoods, Wendell Falls? All of the shopping and growth that is happening over in Wendell Falls Treelight Square and Collective will be easily accessible from Knightdale Station (particularly once other new neighborhoods, like Roberston Crossing, are fully developed and add roadways, which will cut down on driving distance).

We love the variety and vibrancy of the nearby towns and enjoy visiting the museums, theaters, parks, and landmarks they offer.  I know a lot of emphasis is put on Raleigh or RTP access in triangle-related information, but we can’t forget about some of the smaller towns that are booming with growth and filled with charm.  Knightdale has excellent access to towns like Wendell (10 minutes or less), Zebulon (15 min), Rolesville (10-15 min), Wake Forest (20-25 min), and Clayton (15-25 min), all of which have their own unique and charming vibes and downtowns. 

4. Friendly Community

Knightdale Station is more than just a neighborhood; it’s a community. Residents have their own Facebook group and are often willing to lend each other a hand.  The social committee organizes community events throughout the year, such as a holiday activity box pick up, movie nights, an Easter egg hunt, and the Fourth of July stroller and bike parade, where kids and adults can bling out their rides in fun red, white, and blue decorations and ride through the street.  

By the way, if you are a lover of all things Halloween, then you’re going to LOVE this neighborhood. Residents go all out with music, dry ice, animatronics, huge skeletons, lighting, and TONS and TONS of candy (and maybe even some jello shots for the adults). It’s seriously one of the best nights of the year around here, all right outside your doorstep.

The community is also diverse, with different races, ethnicities, and age ranges living here.  The variety of housing, including more moderately-sized row homes and multiple plans with owner’s suites downstairs, genuinely allows residents the opportunity to continue to live in the same neighborhood throughout their lifetime.

And for those who are Pickleball lovers, Knightdale Station is just around the corner from Harper Park, which has four outdoor pickleball courts and, from what we’ve heard, a very active, friendly pickleball community there!

5. A Variety of School Options

Okay, ya’ll…bear with me. This section will be a little lengthy here, but that’s because it was one of my top items to consider when we moved, so I want to give you all of the information you deserve to make an informed decision about what is best for your family. So, let’s talk about schools.

Knightdale Station is zoned within the Wake County Public School System, which is one of the best school systems in the state. As of the 2024 school year, the neighborhood’s base schools are Lockhart Elementary, Neuse River Middle, and Knightdale High. 

Now, I’ll be honest: When you visit a website like greatschools.org, seeing some of the above schools’ scores might be disheartening.  However, all base schools have shown tremendous post-pandemic growth, and these test scores are often skewed because they are Title 1 schools.  There are two resources that I would encourage you to check out that paint a much more thorough picture of the base schools for the neighborhood:

Beyond the base schools listed above, some wonderful Wake County Magnet Schools are located within a 10-20 minute drive from Knightdale Station.  Hodge Road Magnet Elementary School in Knightdale offers a Spanish language immersion program if you want to immerse your child in a foreign language.  

Suppose your child would thrive on a gifted and talented track. In that case, multiple options are available to the east in Zebulon, NC, where the elementary and middle schools are both gifted and talented magnet schools, or the west in Raleigh with Poe Elementary, Moore Square Middle, and Enloe High School. Perhaps you want your child to learn in elementary school through a play-based curriculum at Powell Elementary.  Other Magnet programs for creative arts and design are available in Wendell, just a quick 10-minute drive away.  

The options to apply to schools are truly a bit overwhelming!  Please note that magnet schools are on an application and lottery basis, so there is no guarantee for transfer.

Plenty of options are available if you are interested in pursuing other options beyond public school, such as local charter or private schools.

Highly acclaimed charter schools such as Doral Academy, East Wake Academy, Endeavor Charter School, Quest Academy, and Raleigh Charter High School are all within a 20-minute drive from downtown Knightdale.

For private options, one of the best schools that plenty of Eastern Wake parents rave about, Thales Academy, is located WITHIN Knightdale Station.  Thales Academy in Knightdale is a K-8 school known for its classical education with direct instruction methods and offering private education at a more affordable tuition.  Many children who attend Thales Academy within the neighborhood enjoy the benefit of walking to and from school.

Lastly, within a 15-minute drive of Knightdale Station is the private Raleigh Day School, an intimate, Waldorf-based private school in East Raleigh. Multiple traditional private school options are also available closer to Downtown and North Raleigh as well, such as Ravenscroft, Saint Mary’s School, etc.

6. Easy Access to the YMCA at Knightdale Station Pool

Another perk of living in Knightdale Station is being close to the local YMCA at Knightdale Station outdoor pool, which is located within Knightdale Station Park. The YMCA is a great place to enjoy swimming with an awesome twisty tube slide.  They also hold trackout and summer camps at this location.  However, please note that membership to this pool is not included in the typical HOA fees for Knightdale Station and must be obtained through the Triangle YMCA.

There hasn’t been any construction movement yet, but the Triangle YMCA owns land adjacent to the current pool, where a future YMCA recreational facility is planned. However, no timeline has been put forth for this as of February 2024 (at least, not publicly available).  But if you are thinking long-term, you might have a rec center steps away, too!

7. The Knightdale Station Greenway

If you are a biking, running, skateboarding, nature wanderer, or walking enthusiast, the greenway along Knightdale Station will be one of your favorite spots in the neighborhood.

The neighborhood greenway runs behind homes through a wooded area alongside wetlands and a creek.  Most of this area has been preserved, so mature sweet gum and pine trees are throughout, making a great habitat for songbirds and squirrels.  There has even been a great blue heron spotted a few times around the stormwater retention ponds.

With the completion of additional phases by Dream Finders Homes, an additional greenway within the neighborhood will be constructed, allowing for more pathways to allow residents to stay connected.

But by far, some of the biggest news in Knightdale will be that the Mingo Creek Greenway is being extended all the way to Knightdale Station Park by the summer of 2024, allowing Knightdale Station residents access to over 35+ more miles of greenway, as the Mingo Creek Greenway connects to the Neuse River Greenway.  So, this will be an outdoor enthusiast’s, runner’s, and cyclist’s paradise!

8. Daycare Options

If you have young children, you will be happy to know that Knightdale Station has several daycare options nearby. One is the Knightdale Station Preschool, a full-time option for children from 6 weeks to 5 years. The Knightdale Station Preschool offers individual classrooms for each age group and fun outdoor spaces with an awesome train-themed outdoor playground.

Another option is the Northside Preschool, which is a quality, Christ-centered, play-based preschool for children from the age of one to Pre-K. The Northside Preschool is a half-day option that follows a STEAM and theme-based curriculum that encourages the children to learn through play, socialization, and hands-on activities. These preschool options are within walking or biking distance from Knightdale Station and have excellent reviews from local parents.

We know how important it is to find a reliable and nurturing daycare for your children, and Knightdale Station residents are so fortunate to have these options with a great reputation so close by.

9. Green Living

Knightdale Station is not only a beautiful and comfortable place to live but also an eco-friendly and sustainable one. The homes in Knightdale Station are built with energy-efficient features, such as low-E windows, LED lighting, programmable thermostats, and Energy Star appliances. 

Solar panels are an option for homeowners for installation after purchase.  Stormwater retention ponds are all throughout the neighborhood to mitigate any flooding risks.

If safe pedestrian access is important to you, then this neighborhood should check all the marks.  Neighborhood lighting and sidewalks wind throughout, allowing you to get out and exercise safely day or night.

Lastly, you’ll see beautiful but natural landscaping all throughout the neighborhood, with many trees and shrubs native to North Carolina.

10. Future Growth

Knightdale Station is a constantly growing and improving community. Over 50,000 square feet of commercial and retail space is planned for within the neighborhood in multiple areas (currently referred to as Knightdale Station Commercial).

The Downtown North development is another super exciting development within walking distance of Knightdale Station.  Eventually, this mixed-used master-planned development will create a brand-new town center with over 500,000 square feet of retail and commercial space and additional community parks and greenspace.

The Lofts at Knightdale Station are currently under construction and slated to be complete by Fall 2024, which will be luxury apartments.  However, the building closest to Knightdale Station Park will be dedicated to 12,000 square feet of commercial space.

Lastly, another residential neighborhood, Robertson Crossing, will eventually connect to Knightdale Station and will have 13 acres of space dedicated to commercial/mixed-use.

The Cons

Now, I’m all about honesty on here, so let’s get down to business.  Knightdale Station won’t be for everyone.  Here are my top reasons why it might not be the best fit for you:

  • Traffic and Commute: The town of Knightdale is growing.  If you work in Durham, Chapel Hill, RTP, or other parts of the Triangle that are a bit further out, you may have to deal with traffic congestion and delays and will be signing up for a 30+ minute commute.
  • Limited Nightlife and Entertainment: The neighborhood has some awesome restaurants and breweries near it, but if you’re looking for a large variety of dining, bars, and entertainment options right this moment, you might be a bit underwhelmed. However, if you don’t mind waiting, these amenities will come!
  • If You Want a Large Lot/Country Feel: Most of the lots here are all typically under a quarter of an acre in size.  It might be a challenge if you are looking for secluded, wide-open spaces.
  • Construction and Noise: Knightdale Station is a new and growing community, which means there is still much construction and development. This can cause noise, dust, and disruption, especially for those near construction sites. While the construction is a sign of progress and improvement, it can also be annoying for some.
