How Knightdale NC Is Growing: Astonishing Changes in 2023 and 2024!

Knightdale NC The 2023 State of the Town welcome sign

Hey everyone, Happy New Year!  I don’t know about you, but 2023 felt like a whirlwind, and I feel like 2024 has no intention of slowing down so far.  I was recently asked what’s new in Knightdale, NC, from 2023 and heading into 2024,  and after attending the first annual State of the Town address given by Mayor Jessica Day, I realized I needed to list the big highlights that immediately came to mind.

Please note that this list does not encompass all projects or changes. For additional information, please review Knightdale’s development projects list or contact Knightdale’s Community Relations department.  But these projects and accomplishments are shaping the future of Knightdale residents for decades to come.

Knightdale NC Commercial

What happened in 2023

  • A brand new Panera just opened on Knightdale Blvd.
  • The Depot on First is now open in downtown Knightdale.  The owners did a beautiful job of renovating it!  The menu pricing is $$$, but it is a wonderful, unique dining experience for Knightdale and beyond.

  • The Rewind Retro bar has also been open for a while now in downtown Knightdale.  They have music bingo, karaoke, an 80s prom night, video game tournaments, etc.  It’s a really fun place, and you can bring the kids up until 8 pm when it changes to adults only.
  • The Pink Magnolia is a boutique home goods and clothing store with other cool vintage finds, like record collections. The owners totally renovated the house with an eclectic style- it’s such a unique place for gifts.
  • Haven Farm opened for community events to the public and has been a wonderful, family-friendly venue for events such as the NC Eat and Play Fall Hootenanny Festival.

  • A beautiful mural was painted near the Knightdale Crossing Target by mural artist Sean Kernick, featuring cardinals and greenway bridges.

What’s to come in 2024

  • Dick’s Sporting Goods is now gone in the Knightdale Crossing shopping center, but Academy Sports + Outdoors is moving in there and is currently renovating. This is exciting, as the only other Triangle store is in Apex!
  • The Bojangles over by Knightdale Station is getting a major renovation, including sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, and updated landscaping.
  • The Lofts at Knightdale Station will be opening in 2024.  Per their ad boards, commercial property, including retail and office space, should be opening near the construction site in the fall of 2024.  This is located right across from Knightdale Station Park, near Prime BBQ.

  • Downtown North has officially started to break ground for Phase One, which will be the project’s residential portion.  This project was approved over a year ago by the town council. It will include up to 500,000 square feet of retail, ultimately rebuilding Knightdale’s downtown district into a town center right across from Knightdale Station Park.
  • Knightdale Station Commercial was approved by the Town Council in 2023. This will include up to 50,000 square feet of commercial space located at the entrances of Knightdale Station, including pedestrian lighting, landscaping, a paver hardscape gathering space, public art, bike racks, and an extended/expanded sidewalk along Knightdale Blvd.

Parks and Recreation

What happened in 2023

What’s to come in 2024

  • Panther Rock Park, which will be a passive park with large boulders, is expected to open this summer, 2024. This will be located by the Cheswick community and the new Silverstone community off Hodge Road, close to I-87.

  • A 1.3-mile greenway extension, which will link Knightdale Station Park to the Mingo Creek greenway trail, is tentatively scheduled for completion this Summer, 2024.

  • Knightdale Station Park will be adding lighting to another soccer field, allowing more space for team sports/rec leagues to be played in the evening.

Municipality Updates

  • Knightdale, NC will be opening two new fire stations this year!
  • Fire Station 1 will be located on the corner of Forestville Road and Old Knight Road.
  • Fire Station 4, located off of Hodge Road, is set to wrap up construction by the end of January 2024.
  • The current Knightdale Public Safety Center will be undergoing renovations to turn it into a dedicated Police Station once the fire department has relocated to its new buildings.
  • Knightdale now has a new community engagement page called Engage Knightdale.  This is a great resource for discovering what the town is working on!
  • The Town launched a new mass communications alert system, GovDelivery, to send communications about emergency management notifications, town events, etc., to all enrolled residents.
  • The Town is working on updating its Comprehensive Land Use Plan (due to the significant growth and development interest).
  • The Town approved the small-area plan for the River District, which runs from the Neuse River to 540.  The town envisions special district signage, a greenway to run parallel to the Neuse River Greenway, parks, a river overlook, Raleigh city skyline viewing stations, kayak launch, etc.
  • The town is planning to further invest in public art and will be planning to start back up its Farmer’s Market program this Spring, 2024.
  • The town has contracted with a consultant ground to begin a study and initial design for a recreation center, which will be located over by the Wake Stone Athletic Park.
  • A crosswalk is being constructed from Hodge Road across Knightdale Blvd.  The town is doing additional studies to help improve pedestrian and vehicular safety.
  • The town added multiple EV-charging stations to Town Hall and Knightdale Station Park in 2023.

Okay, ya’ll…I can’t even begin.  There are so many new construction activities either winding down or coming online at any time that it has become hard to keep up with it all.  I would highly suggest reviewing the development projects map by the Town of Knightdale for further information.

More Changes Coming…Not Quite in Knightdale, But Close!

  • The Wake Tech East campus will open in the fall of 2024.
  • Wendell Falls Treelight Square and the Collective continue to grow.  Multiple retail, health and beauty services, and dining options opened in 2023.  Treelight Square recently announced that more dining will come in 2024, including Chipotle and City BBQ. If you want a peek at what’s to come, take a look at the Town of Wendell’s development map, where I spotted a Culver’s in the works for Wendell Falls as well!
  • WakeMed’s new Wendell Healthplex will have a standalone emergency department center with 12 beds and Healthplex, which will house various outpatient imaging services and will be opening on January 9, 2024.
  • Keep an eye on Wake County’s new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.  While this first portion will be undergoing construction throughout 2024, with plans to open by 2025, it will be located in East Raleigh, just a few minutes outside Knightdale.  The development and infrastructure changes to come will continue to grow the area.
  • Keep your eye on the I-540 southern loop!  This project is going full steam ahead and, upon its completion, will add enhanced connectivity to towns like Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, and Clayton.
  • Wake County Parks and Recreation had a community planning session for the Lake Myra County Park, which will be located next to Wendell Falls and the Kellam-Wyatt Farm County Park in East Raleigh.
  • Further out in the Triangle… there is Wolfspeed in Siler City, VinFast in Sanford, Disney’s Asteria in Pittsboro, and Apple Campus in Cary, to name a few.  I think 2024 will shape up to be a year filled with change and growth!

Whew!  For me, it is so exciting to see so many new possibilities taking shape. 🙂

I’ll try to keep my eye out for more official updates from the Town of Knightdale, Wake County, and local businesses throughout 2024, so if you would like more updated information, please follow me on social media!

And from my home to yours, I wish you a magical and exciting 2024!

  1. Hey Taylor – Thanks for writing this up! There is supposed to be a connection from Cheswick to the Greenway (it has been started but not completed). Do you know when that is scheduled to be worked on? Thanks!

    1. Hi Stephen! Thanks so much for your comment! I’m not sure about when the connection from Cheswick to the greenway will be completed. Do you mean the Mingo Creek Greenway, or the greenways that are being created by the developers in the new neighborhoods of Stoneriver and Silverstone that are right next to Cheswick?

I would suggest you contact the Town’s Development Services department.
They might be able to assist and give you some further guidance on a timeline. 🙂

    1. Hi Tresa! Yes, you can follow me on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest!

I’ll also try to work on getting social media buttons on my blog posts themselves, but if you scroll down to the bottom of my home page, the social buttons should be down there, as well! 🙂

Thanks so much for your kind words and support!
